Lowest Common Learning

Welcome to the website dedicated to teaching things in simple easy to understand terms.

Throughout my career it has always brought me much joy to teach others how to know the things I know.

While I don't think I'm all that smart, I have always been complimented on how well I teach. I'm a very simple man who talks in very simple (sometimes colorful, sometimes humorous) terms.

I guess I have never lost the child-like inquisitiveness of "but why". I teach with that foundation, and it appears my audience likes my ways. I'm never happy to teach how. "Just do this..." has never been my style.

Sadly, that's what I see with much of my fellow nerds. Too often, people teach the "how" but seldom teach the "why" or they spend too much time on things you don't need to know "right now". You can't learn multiplication until you learn addition, etc.

I'll often equate the knowing "how" without knowing the "why" to trained Monkeys. They push a button and get a banana. One day they'll push the button and won't get that banana. Then, they get upset and start flinging poo.

Throughout my lessons, I'll try to explain a little history, a little bit of the origins, a little bit of the etymology, a little bit of philosophy, give you information to build on as the lowest common denominator, and a few opinions formed through countless mistakes I've seen and done.

Whether you are completely new and know very little or a seasoned professional who never thought very deeply about these things. Hopefully, you find it helpful and perhaps you'll gain a greater understanding.

Check back often. Because of my writing style, I tend to put function before form. I'll make a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes. I'll add images and context later. Sometimes, I'll completely re-write things I thought were clear only to realize they weren't. And one day, hopefully soon, I'll get the courage to turn these into video tutorials.
